As Project-Based Learning gains more interest and attention from educators around the world, we often feel compelled to address a very simple, yet essential question: What is the difference between doing projects and Project-Based Learning?
We frequently have teachers explain to me that they do projects with students and it "doesn't work" as a primary pedagogical method.
"Kids don't learn as much doing projects."
"Only the strong students can really do projects."
"Students spend too much time making products, they will never be prepared for an exam."
"Working on projects all day is chaos."
Maybe some of these things are true for "project-work" but we have never experienced these issues with Project-Based Learning.
Project-work (as it's frequently done in most schools) is not the same as Project-Based Learning.
